Natural Haircare Must-Haves for the Entire Family

Natural hair care is an important topic in my household. We all seem to go through various stages when it comes to how we wear our hair. I have a tendency to do a big chop every year or so and my husband will go from bald to a small afro at any given time. My son goes through phases as well.

No matter how we choose to wear our hair, I always make sure that we are stocked up with the basic products needed to maintain healthy hair. With so many items on the market, the choices can be overwhelming, not to mention costly. You don’t have to have the most expensive items in order to properly care for your hair.

Here is a list of natural hair must-haves for your entire family:

Sulfate-Free Shampoo

When cleansing your hair, you will need a good shampoo. I prefer sulfate-free shampoos because they are not as drying as shampoos that contain sulfates. There are some naturals that skip the shampoo altogether and choose to co-wash (conditioner wash) instead. The go-to brand of shampoo for my family is Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo. It gently cleanses without drying out our hair.

Leave-In Conditioner

Whether your hair is kinky, curly or coily, you will need a good leave-in. Choose a water-based conditioner that will detangle your hair, and keep your curls soft, smooth and properly moisturized. My family’s favorite is Giovanni Direct Leave in Conditioner. It is a lightweight conditioner that does not weigh your hair down. It also does an excellent job of moisturizing my hair.

Deep Conditioner

Deep conditioning should be an important part of any natural hair care regimen. Deep conditioners restore moisture to hair, help maintain elasticity, strengthens hair strands, restores your hairs natural sheen, and helps to prevent and/or reverse damage. My personal favorite is Alikay Naturals Honey and Sage Deep Conditioner. It leaves my hair super soft and moisturized, not to mention it smells absolutely wonderful.

Oil

A good oil is necessary to help reduce frizz and to add sheen to your hair. Use it for hot oil treatments and when performing scalp massages to help stimulate blood flow and promote healthy hair growth.

If your guy is bald, oil is necessary for his scalp. It will help to keep his scalp moisturized and prevent dryness and flaking. You can use any oil of your choosing. My favorites are olive oil and grapeseed oil.

Wide Tooth Detangling Comb

A wide tooth comb is necessary to help detangle your strands after shampooing and conditioning. Always detangle in sections and start combing your hair from the ends, working upwards towards your roots to avoid unnecessary breakage.

Rat Tail Comb

This is used for parting your hair for various styles.

Boar Bristle Brush

A boar bristle brush is needed to smooth your hair when styling and for sleeking your edges. You should opt for a soft boar bristle brush to use on your husband or son’s head if their hair is shorter around the sides.

Hair Pick (Afro Pick)

Whether you are rocking a small ‘fro, or if you have big hair, this will come in handy to help fluff your hair into that desired style.

Bobby Pins

Bobby pins can be used to add a decorative touch to your hairstyle. These small objects are a necessity for those “bad hair days” or when you simply want a quick, pinned up style.

Jumbo Hair Clips

These will come in handy when you need to section your hair to apply product or when you are styling your hair.

Silk/Satin Bonnet

Protect your hair at night by wearing a satin bonnet. Pillowcases not only snag your hair while sleeping but can also dry out your hair strands. If you don’t like hair bonnets, sleep on a silk pillowcase instead.
